Wallbox for a detached house

From selecting the power rating to the inspection report. We first check the circuit breaker and what is running in the house, and only then consider the charging station brand.

Power is selected based on the property, not the vehicle

The most common question is whether to choose 11 or 22 kW. The answer almost always starts with the main circuit breaker. An 11 kW wallbox draws around 16 A per phase, while a 22 kW unit requires around 32 A. A house with a 3×25 A main breaker, an air-to-air heat pump and an induction hob has no spare capacity for 22 kW, even if the vehicle supports it.

The second part of the answer lies with the vehicle. Some cars have an on-board charger limited to 11 kW, in some cases even to 7,4 kW. In such cases, the 22 kW paid capacity will never be utilised.

The third factor is how long the vehicle remains parked. When left overnight, it will charge even at 11 kW. Faster charging only addresses situations where the battery must be replenished within an hour or two between trips.

Power determines only the speed. Whether it will work at your location depends on the circuit breaker and the distribution network operator's consent.

Dynamic power management instead of a higher-rated circuit breaker

If the house has no spare capacity, there are two options. Either upgrade the main fuse, which requires negotiations with the distributor and permanently higher payments based on its size. Or implement dynamic management: the station measures the house's total consumption and automatically reduces charging when an oven is switched on or a pump activates. The vehicle charges slightly slower, but nothing trips out and the payment for the fuse remains unchanged.

For most homes, the second option is cheaper. However, it requires a station capable of this and metering on the main supply, so it must be arranged in advance, not added later.

What we do

The most common reason for delays is not the installation but the distributor. Therefore, we submit the paperwork at the very beginning and schedule the installation only for a confirmed date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What power rating is sufficient for a wallbox at a detached house?

For most households, 11 kW is sufficient. The car stands overnight and even 11 kW will charge it from nearly empty in that time. 22 kW makes sense where the car must be charged quickly between two trips, and not every vehicle can accept this anyway. The main fuse also decides: 22 kW is 32 A per phase, which often becomes a problem in a house with an air-to-air heat pump.

What if I only have a single-phase connection?

It is possible, just slower. A single-phase installation provides approximately 3.7 kW, which overnight equates to tens of kilometres of range. This suffices for short trips, but for daily commutes exceeding fifty kilometres it often falls short. We verify this from utility bills, not estimates.

Where to install a wallbox?

The location where you park and where the cable reaches your vehicle's charging port, not where a free wall is available. The port position varies by manufacturer. The second criterion is the distance from the distribution board, as every metre of cabling incurs cost. During the site inspection, these two factors are assessed together.

Do I need to change the circuit breaker or electricity meter for the wallbox?

Sometimes yes. When the reserved power is increased, the main fuse changes and so does the payment for its size. When switching to a tariff favourable for charging, the electricity meter usually changes as well. Both are handled by the distributor and are the most common reason why implementation takes weeks instead of days.
